Makret notes Bonds acting weird, cable looking heavy, and AI jitters shaking the desks

Alright folks, grab a coffee. Been staring at terminal windows since 4 AM and honestly, the macro picture right now is an absolute mess. If you're trading directional without keeping an eye on the bond market, you're gonna get absolutey rekt this week. Let's break down what the charts and the wire reports are telling us because the cross-currents are getting wild.

First off, look at Treasuries. We're staring down the barrel of a third straight weekly drop in yields. Why? Safe haven bids are ramping up hard, and a lot of that is being fueled by sudden AI worries creeping into equity sentiment. Tech valuations are getting a bit shaky, people are starting to sweat over capex returns, and smart money is rotating back into duration. Classic flight to safety. But here’s where it gets bizarre and decoupled—while US yields are sliding down, look across the globe. India's 40-year bond yield just printed its highest level since 2018! Let me repeat that: 2018. Talk about divergent monetary realities. Emerging markets are facing a totally different beast with local inflation and capital flows, while the core markets are chasing safety. If you're trading global fixed income, the volatility curve is screaming at you right now. Do not ignore it.

Now, let's pivot to FX because my screens are lighting up on Cable. GBP/USD is sitting right up near the 1.3369 handle as we kick off the final week of October. Monthly peaks, baby. Looks great on a surface glance if you're long, but zoom out and look at the risks growing underneath. We’ve got the UK Budget coming up real soon, followed immediately by the Bank of England rate meeting on November 5th. Data-wise, preliminary PMIs actually surprised to the upside, showing UK private sector activity accelerating to its fastest pace in a while.

So why am I nervous? Because everyone and their mum is chasing this momentum, and retail is knee-deep in FOMO. We've seen this movie before. Pound pushes up into resistance right ahead of a massive fiscal event and a central bank pivot, and then BAM—liquidity gets swept on both sides. I'm seeing guys on Twitter trying to leverage up long here at the highs. Brutal. Personally, I've scaled out of my swing longs from the 1.31s. Not worth holding full size into a UK budget where headline risk can wipe out a week's gains in three seconds. If we get a dovish lean from the BoE or some tax surprises in the budget, this thing is gonna knife right back down through 1.3250 before you can even hit your stop loss.

What's the play then? For me, I'm keeping my powder dry. Scalping small sizes on the intraday ranges. DCA-ing into some longer-term bond plays while the safety bid is active, but keeping tight risk parameters because bond volatility is leaking into everything else. Don't let the green candles on GBP fool you into thinking the path of least resistance is straight up. The macro crosswinds are too choppy. Protect your capital, manage your leverage, and don't marry your positions this week. Let's see how London opens up tomorrow. Good luck out there.
