Total newbie question: Why is the Pound falling if the BoE kept interest rates the same?

Hey everyone, beginner trader here!

I’ve been trying to learn how central bank news affects forex, and I’m a bit confused by what happened with Sterling (GBP) today.

I saw the headline saying the Bank of England decided to hold interest rates, but then the Pound started dropping right after. I always thought holding rates meant things were stable, so why would the currency fall?

The news also mentioned that "cautious minutes" weighed on the currency. What does that actually mean in plain English? Did the market expect a rate hike, or are traders worried about future rate cuts because of what the BoE said in those notes?

I’m currently watching the GBP/USD pair and not really sure how to interpret this. For the experienced traders in here: how do you trade news like this? Do you see a rate hold with "cautious" language as a sell signal, or do you wait for things to settle down before jumping in?

Would love any advice or explanations on how you guys analyze this kind of central bank news! Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the club! Honestly, don't sweat it too much, this trips up a lot of beginners. What you're seeing is basically a classic case of "buy the rumor, sell the fact." The market already expected them to hold rates, so that was already priced in. The "cautious" tone in the minutes just signaled to big money that the BoE might start cutting rates sooner than people thought, which drags the currency down.

Personally, I swing trade the 4H and Daily charts, so I never trade the immediate news release. It's usually just a lot of noise and a quick way to get chopped up. I always let the dust settle and see where the daily candle closes before I even think about looking for a setup. Patience is key, there's absolutely no need to rush in.
