USD/JPY catching serious heat after Trump comments, watch your leverage

Hey everyone, hope the week has been treating your PnL well. Just saw the news hit the wire that the yen spiked hard after Trump started talking about the currency's recent weakness, finally putting a stop to that relentless dollar win streak. Ngl, if you've been blindly riding the USD/JPY upward trend thinking it would never pull back, today was a harsh reminder of how fast headlines can flip the script.

I learned this the hard way back during the 2022 intervention madness when I held a leveraged long position right through a sudden policy jawbone. It wiped out a solid week of gains in about five minutes because my stop loss was way too loose and I got greedy holding for just a few more pips near the highs.

Trading political or macro headline risk like this is brutal. If you're looking to scalp the current volatility, keep your position sizes tiny and don't even think about marrying your bias. The market can stay irrational longer than we can stay solvent, but political pressure on exchange rates moves fast. Always scale out into strength and keep those stops tight, because when the big players start reacting to Washington chatter, the slippage can get ugly real quick.

Anyone else getting caught in the chop today, or managed to dodge the bullet before the drop?

Honestly, everyone is freaking out over a standard political jawbone, but this is just noise. The trend isn't actually broken yet, and these dips are usually massive buy opportunities once the weak hands get shaken out. Long USD/JPY still looks like the easiest trade on the board.

Classic headline risk, happens every single time. My automated alerts went off but my risk limits kept me out of the fire. Anyone trying to catch this falling knife right now is just asking for a margin call.

Man, people calling this a "buy opportunity" are playing with fire. Sure, Trump is talking it down, but look at the underlying macro—inflation isn't going anywhere and the Fed is backed into a corner. If they have to keep rates higher for longer or even hint at another hike to cool things down, this "noise" is going to turn into a full-on liquidity trap for anyone overleveraged. I'm staying sidelined, there's way too much tail risk right now to be guessing which way the political wind blows.

I’m with the guy saying stay sidelined. Trying to front-run these headlines is just gambling at this point. I've got my alerts set for the 150 handle, but until the dust settles, my hands are off the keyboard. Seen too many accounts get nuked trying to catch these knives during a Trump tweet storm. Let the volatility burn itself out.

@JulianCraft I’m with you on staying sidelined. Everyone is talking macro and sentiment, but nobody is looking at the daily chart—we're sitting right on top of some major structural support that’s been holding since way back. If that level gives way, the selling is going to get real ugly regardless of what the Fed thinks. Why bother gambling on a bounce here when price is currently doing exactly what it wants? Just let the candles tell you where the next move is coming from instead of chasing headlines.

Spot on, Julian. Plus if you pull up the 4-hour chart, we just printed a nasty bearish MACD crossover right as that headline dropped, and the RSI is flashing a clear hidden bearish divergence. Way too many people trying to catch falling knives right now without looking at momentum. I'm sitting on my hands until we see how this daily support holds.
