Watching the BTP-Bund spread widening again, stay sharp out there

Seen a lot of chatter about the Italy-Germany bond spread blowing out recently thanks to the chaos coming out of France, and honestly, it’s giving me major flashbacks to previous volatility spikes in the Eurozone. Back when I was still learning the ropes, I used to try and scalp these moves, thinking I could front-run the panic, but I got absolutely wrecked trying to catch a falling knife during a credit selloff. It taught me that when these spreads start widening, it’s usually a signal that systemic risk is creeping back into the markets, and trying to be a hero isn't worth the drawdown.

If you’re trading the periphery, you’ve got to keep your risk management tighter than usual right now. When liquidity dries up and the institutional guys start dumping sovereign debt, your stop losses are going to get blown right through if you’re over-leveraged. I’ve shifted my focus to keeping position sizes small and staying away from the directional noise until the dust settles. It’s way too easy to get caught in a fomo trap when headline risk hits, but sticking to your thesis—or just sitting on your hands—is how you survive these periods without nuking your account. Ngl, it’s tempting to try and play the recovery, but I’ve learned that the market can stay irrational way longer than I can stay solvent. Anyone else seeing some weird action in the currency crosses because of this or is it just me?
