Everyone shorting the Yen right now is sleepwalking into a massive trap

Look at the headlines today—everyone is dogpiling on the Yen, talking about how it's headed for its worst week in ages because the BoJ's latest hike "wasn't aggressive enough."

The prevailing consensus across FinTwit and every trading desk seems to be: *The carry trade is fully back on, Ueda is too timid, short JPY to oblivion.*

Honestly? I think the market is completely misreading the room here, and late shorts are begging to get their faces ripped off.

Think about the macro divergence for a second. The BoJ just took another step toward normalization. Sure, it wasn’t the shock-and-awe 50 bps hammer the hyper-aggressive desks were secretly hoping for, but the direction of travel is crystal clear: Japan is hiking, while the rest of the G10 central banks are either already cutting or looking for an excuse to ease. Yield differentials are structurally narrowing, not widening.

Yet, retail and momentum funds are piling back into JPY shorts at extreme levels like nothing has changed over the last two years. Pushing carry trades at these valuation extremes feels like picking up pennies in front of a steamroller. If US data wobbles even slightly or the MoF decides to step in with another multi-billion-dollar reminder of who controls the currency, this crowded trade is going to unwind violently.

Am I taking crazy pills here, or is the consensus completely blinded by short-term price action? Who else is actually using this dip to build a long Yen position, and what’s your invalidation level?

Macro logic is sound, but being right too early with full size is how accounts get wiped out.

If you're building a long JPY here, your position sizing needs to be small enough to easily stomach a 200-300 pip squeeze against you before the turn. I’m nibbling with maybe a quarter of my normal risk unit, hard stop just above the recent intervention highs. The carry will bleed you dry if you try to hold a full position through chop, so protect the downside first.

You're both right on the macro, but why force it right now? Just flip over to the daily chart and look at the trend—trying to catch a falling knife or front-run a macro turn on lower timeframes is how you get chopped to pieces before the real move even starts. I'm just sitting on my hands and waiting for the 4H structure to actually shift in our favor instead of guessing the exact bottom.

Totally agree with the crowd mentality part, but honestly I wouldn't touch any fiat right now with a ten-foot pole anyway. Between persistent sticky inflation that central banks refuse to truly squash and the inevitable panic rate hikes we're going to see down the road when things break, holding cash is just watching your purchasing power get vaporized. Everyone's so focused on the carry trade unwind that they're completely blind to the fact that all major currencies are racing to the bottom.

Man, everyone in here is acting like a long JPY trade is some kind of moral crusade against the trend. You're all trying to outsmart a freight train just because you read some bearish macro blog. Shorting the yen has literally been the easiest money of the decade, and every time someone screams "trap" it just ends up squeezing the stubborn permabulls out even harder. Keep calling the top though, I'm sure the carry trade will magically reverse itself out of sheer politeness.
