Completely confused about hardware wallets after reading this, what should a newbie do?

Hey everyone, ngl I'm kinda freaking out a bit here. I've been stacking a tiny bit of bitcoin lately and was thinking about finally getting a Ledger just to keep my bags safe, but then I saw this piece talking about alternatives like ETFs, passkeys, and multisig. Honestly, it went right over my head. Are hardware wallets even necessary anymore if there are all these other options? I don't really get how things like passkeys work compared to just holding a device, and the article mentions every method has its own crazy risks and trade-offs. For someone just trying HODL a small amount without losing it all to some stupid mistake, is it better to just stick to the basics, or should I be looking into these other methods? Any advice from the vets here would be super appreciated before I fomo into buying the wrong thing. How do you guys actually store your coins safely without getting overwhelmed by tech stuff?

Honestly, do the exact opposite of what the mainstream crowd always screams at newbies. Everyone treats cold storage like it's some holy grail that guarantees 100% safety, but half the people losing crypto these days are just messing up their own seed phrase backups or getting phished because they feel "safe" on a hardware wallet. If you're just holding a few bucks worth of coin, keeping it on a reputable exchange with 2FA enabled is genuinely less risky than you messing up a hardware setup and locking yourself out forever.
