Everyone on crypto Twitter is already popping champagne because Modern Treasury is applying for a national trust bank charter to custody stablecoins and handle fiat rails. I swear the moonboys celebrate literally any headline with the word bank in it without thinking about what it actually means for the market long term.
Are we seriously hyping up the exact same legacy rails we built crypto to escape? Slapping a federal trust charter on digital asset custody isn't some massive win for adoption, it's just a giant green light for regulators to chokehold liquidity and turn on-chain assets into a surveillance sandbox. Once you force stablecoin flow through the OCC's walled garden, you're not getting borderless, permissionless money anymore. You are just getting glorified PayPal credits wrapped in five layers of compliance red tape.
Not to mention, look at the track record here. Fintechs blow millions in legal fees trying to kiss the regulator's ring, only to end up with crippled, slow-moving products that real on-chain users won't touch with a ten-foot pole. If the entire bull case relies on handing all the custody back to state-sanctioned trust banks, we've basically traded decentralization for short-term institutional pump hopium.
Are you guys genuinely bullish on these bank charters, or are we just coping while TradFi quietly neuters the entire space?
