USDCAD, the chop, and why everyone is ignoring the bigger trap

Look, I’ve been staring at the USDCAD charts since 5 am this morning, coffee in hand, just watching the price action melt away like it’s got nowhere else to go. I see the Elliott Wave guys posting about this double zigzag and the "inevitable" further weakness toward those lower levels, and honestly? It all feels like noise. Everyone is so obsessed with finding the perfect count, counting waves like they’re counting sheep before bed, but they’re ignoring the actual structure of the market. I’ve seen this movie before. We get these clean textbook patterns that suck retail in, only for the institutional liquidity to wipe out everyone’s stoplosses once the FOMO peaks.

I was testing a mean-reversion setup on my prop account last week, just trying to DCA into some positions on the dip, and got absolutely rekt by a sudden volatility spike that didn’t even make sense macro-wise. That’s the problem with the current environment. You’ve got people reading these technical analysis reports like they’re scripture, and then you’ve got the macro headlines—like this latest Binance/North Korea hack story—tossing gasoline on a fire that nobody can actually see. $6.3B gone? It sounds like a movie plot, but it just reminds me how fragile this whole "digital asset" and "midterm jitter" narrative really is. The pound is firming up because the dollar is slipping, supposedly, but who actually believes the dollar is weak right now? It’s just the market finding an excuse to consolidate before the next big rug pull.

Everyone keeps talking about AI jitters and midterms like they’re brand new variables. They aren't. They're just the new flavor of volatility. I’ve been through enough cycles to know that when the forums start hyper-focusing on a specific technical pattern—especially one that looks as "predictable" as this USDCAD zigzag—it’s usually the exact moment to start scaling out, not in. I’m not saying I’m shorting the hell out of it or going all-in long, because that’s just gambling with extra steps. I’m saying look at the broader order flow. When the retail crowd is buzzing about wave counts, the smart money is already busy setting the traps for the next liquidity grab.

I remember back in '21, I was convinced a specific trendline was unbreakable. Held the bag for three months, watching my margin slowly bleed out while I kept telling myself the "fundamentals" hadn't changed. They hadn't. But the market didn't care. It never cares. It just moves to where the stops are. It’s funny how we spend all day looking at these colorful lines on a monitor, thinking we’ve decoded the matrix, when really we’re just guessing where the next wave of panic is gonna hit. Is anyone else actually tracking the volume profiles or are we all just staring at the same lagging indicators hoping for a sign?

Whatever. I’m gonna grab more coffee and wait for the New York open to see if this "weakness" is real or just another headfake designed to flush out the weak hands before the real move starts. Probably just going to sit on my hands for the rest of the day, honestly. Trade safe or whatever.
